Chapter 2: Glow Worm Meets Mr. Potato Head

Glow Worm lay back on Brett's bed and waited for him to come home. He was snuggled into the comfy pillows. It was late, he was tired, and Glow Worm had spent his day with Tommy. They had ventured out into other rooms of the apartment, exploring. Glow Worm had found some interesting things. He found that Brett was quite the reader! He had a stack of magazines next to the toilet that Glow Worm, had it not been for Tommy, could barely climb up on. When he'd climbed to the top of the stack, his feet lost purchase and he slipped sending one of the magazines downward, nearly hitting Tommy and landing with a 'thud' on the floor. Glow Worm peeked over the edge and, seeing that the magazine landed open, asked Tommy for a hand down. Tommy brought Glow Worm down and they both peeked into the magazine.

"Hmmmm ...." Glow Worm muttered as he gazed at the page with funny symbols on it. "I think it's just all words." Tommy glanced at Glow Worm and shrugged.

"Could be, what's it say?" Glow worm studied it and read a few words to himself. His eyes grew big and he stared up at Tommy.

"Ummm ... it is a love story, Tommy, yeah, a love story!" Glow Worm said after having read a snippet.

Kaitlin brought her mouth crushing down on top of Jack's pinning his lips and tongue with hers.

She was lying on top of him, crushing him on the bed, she rolled over finally allowing him to breathe,

and breathing he was! His breath came in short, excited spurts. He rolled over and ran his hands

down her silky smooth body until it came to rest on ......

Glow Worm cleared his throat and, using his tiny little arms, turned the page. More words.

"Boring!" Tommy said seeing the white pages filled with black dots. Glow Worm turned another page and then another until he found colorful pictures. "Ohhhhh look at that! People!!" Glow Worm studied the pictures and then looked at Tommy who was smiling. "They look like they're having fun." Tommy said rubbing his furry chin.

"Those are girls, Tommy."

"What's a girl?"

"A girl is the opposite of a boy." Glow Worm explained.

"What's a boy?" Glow Worm sighed. He had no idea that Tommy was so innocent to the ways of the world.

"I am a boy, you are a boy, Brett is a boy. Those ...." He pointed to the two women frolicking on the page. "are girls!" Tommy leaned in for a closer look. They did look a bit different then Brett. For one thing they had two large balls hanging from their chest.

"Hmmmm ...." Tommy mumbled, thinking. "What's the big deal?"

"Dunno ... I have yet to meet a female I care about." Glow Worm said as he scooted his way out of the bathroom. Tommy followed.

"Hey GW ..." Tommy called as Glow Worm inched his way further into the apartment.

"Yes?" Glow Worm asked.

"What is love?" Tommy padded behind Glow Worm slowly.

"Love?" Glow Worm asked him.

"Yeah, love. You said that was a love story you were reading. I Just wondered what love was." Glow Worm spied an entertainment center on the wall in the room and was curious to see what kind of music Brett listened to when he wasn't making it himself.

"Well, love is .... well, it's like a strong feeling between a boy and a girl." Glow Worm grabbed onto a knob with his tiny hands and pulled himself upwards.

"Strong feeling?" Tommy asked planting his paws on his sides. "Like, when you go to eat some food and another muskrat sees the food too and your fur stands on end?" Glow Worm sighed. He just didn't get it!

"No no no no ...." Glow Worm said as he tried to pull himself up further.

"Then what? Like strong like when you feel you have to relieve yourself and it's hard to find just the right place?" Glow Worm inched upwards until he was just about to reach the CDs.

"No! Tommy, help me!" Tommy rushed forward and stood on his back legs. He reached upwards and gave Glow Worm a little shove. Glow Worm leaped up onto the shelf and then leaned against the CDs to catch his breath. "Thank you, Tommy." Glow Worm called down.

"Ya welcome! Now, tell me, what is love?" Glow Worm rolled his eyes to the sky and sighed. How could he describe something he never felt himself? He knew what love was .... he'd seen Brett with a girl and he was loving her with his mouth but that was all he saw, Brett never brought the girl into the bedroom to sleep. "Well, Tommy, it's hard to describe." Glow Worm said as he perused the CD selections Brett had. He found a CD and pulled it out. "Hey!!! Listen to this song, maybe it will help you to understand!" Glow Worm opened up the CD player and slid the round, silver disc in and pressed play. Some funky tune started to play and a man started to sing ......

I love you whether or not you love me.

I love you even if you think that I don't.

Sometimes I find you doubt my love for you

But I don't mind

Why should I mind, why should I mind

What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

Can anybody love anyone so much that they will never fear

Never worry never be sad

The answer is they cannot love this much nobody can

This is why I don't mind you doubting

What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

And maybe love is letting people be just what they want to be

The door always must be left unlocked

To love when circumstance may lead someone away from you

And not to spend the time just doubting .....

What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

The song ended after a musical interlude and Tommy just stared at Glow Worm, unblinking.

"Does that help you, Tommy?" Hearing Glow Worm's voice snapped him out of it. He shook his head and blinked.

"Ummm, nope." Glow Worm threw up his hands in despair.

"I give up then!" Tommy scratched his head while Glow Worm kept looking at the music. "Hey! Look at this Tommy!!" Brett pulled out a CD and tossed it onto the floor. Tommy picked it up and looked at the boys on the covers of the CD.

"What is it?" Tommy asked turning it over in his hands.

"It's a group called The Backstreet Boys! I have heard Brett say he hates them and yet, there is the CD!" Tommy tossed it behind him on the carpet. "Hey, here's another one!" He tossed another CD down. Tommy jumped to the side as the CD came barreling down.

"What's this one?" He asked seeing a pretty girl on the front. She had brown hair and soft-looking brown skin, the balls on the front of her chest peeked through a low-cut blouse.

"J-Lo .... she's a good singer. I can't believe Brett! He says he hates these people and here are their CDs!! Ohhh, Brett and I are gonna have a chat!" Glow Worm climbed up onto another shelf and was taken aback for there, sitting on the shelf, eyes closed was Grandpa Potato Head! He crept up to Mr. Potato Head quietly as not to wake him. Mr. Potato Head was elderly now. Glow Worm remembered sharing Brett's room with him years ago but he hadn't seen him around and assumed that he had become a side dish. Suddenly Mr. Potato Head's eyes flickered open and he stared straight at Glow Worm.

"Well, hello there young fellow." Mr. Potato Head said as he yawned and then stretched.

"Mr. Potato Head!" Glow Worm exclaimed. "I'm so glad to see you!" He reached out and hugged Mr. Potato Head. "I've missed you! What are you doing here?"

"Well, as you remember I was part of Brett's room for a long time way back in Tennessee but when Brett moved here, he never brought me back into his room. He set me up here to guard the CDs from pilchards." Glow Worm nodded but thought, 'some guard! I just threw half a dozen CDs down to Tommy and he never even woke up!'

"Well, I am glad to see you!" Tommy, hearing voices up high hollered up to Glow Worm.

"What's going on up there, Glow Worm?" Glow Worm leaned over the side and hollered back at Tommy.

"I found Grandpa Potato Head!!" Glow Worm turned to Mr. Potato Head. "Would you like to come back into the room with us?" Mr. Potato Head frowned and rubbed his chin. He looked silly doing this, for Brett had left the silly buck teeth for Mr. Head's mouth!

"I don't know ..... are the Transformers there?" Glow Worm shook his head.

"Nope. Garage Sale, I think." Mr. Potato Head nodded.

"Well, perhaps I should just go and take a look!" Glow Worm and Mr. Potato Head shimmied down the entertainment center and headed towards the bedroom. Tommy followed. Once there, Mr. Potato Head looked around. Things sure were different now that Brett was older. The toys were mostly gone save for Tweety, Glow Worm .... the Star Wars Action Figures that adorned a shelf way too high to get to ... and himself, Mr. Potato Head! He sighed. Well, what the heck did Brett do for entertainment these days if not for the toys? He strolled around, careful to avoid the new pile of dirty clothes on the floor. It smelled like a garbage dump, Potato Head noted. "Well ..." Mr. Potato Head said after some time. "I don't know Glow Worm, Brett's had better days and so have I! Ohhhh the stories I could tell!"

"Please, Grandpa Potato Head, do tell!" Potato Head started back towards the entertainment center and Glow Worm and Tommy followed.

"Not today, son, not today. But if you come and visit me again I will entertain you with such stories!" Mr. Potato Head began his ascent to his place of honor. "And bring your fat friend!" He called down when he nearly reached the top. Tommy, self-consciously patted his rounded gut.

"Fat?" He mumbled to himself. Glow Worm and Tommy watched as Mr. Potato Head disappeared onto the shelf and then turned to each other. "Fat?" He asked Glow Worm. "Am I fat?" Glow Worm sighed and turned around to explore a little more.

"Fat is a state of mind, Tommy. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you ..." And they were off.
