Chapter 2

The next morning was sunny and crisp. Kurt awoke early and made himself some breakfast. He hated cooking just for himself. It seemed like such a waste. He cleaned up the dishes and went about the house, putting things away and tidying up. The whole place needed vacuuming and a good dusting. It was almost two before he slowed down. It was then he noticed the light flashing on the answering machine. He played the message. It was Terri. She was returning his call. His heart sped up a pace. He grabbed the phone and dialed her number. After a few rings, he once again encountered the answering machine. Sighing, he left another message. He absolutely despised telephone tag. Where the hell was she anyway? Out all the fucking time! Evidently she wasn't missing him. A day or two and she had moved on with her life. Sadly, he thought he was better off here without her then. He sat down on the couch and stared at nothing. He felt slightly empty inside. He yearned for her. He couldn't decide if it was a sexual yearning or an emotional one. He loved to be with her, she was fun, and intelligent, and could be very serious when the situation warranted. He had grown to really like her. After sometime of staring he pulled himself up and grabbed one of the guitars on stands in the music room. He sat down on his favorite chair and began to play. He sang softly. He decided that when they recorded the new album he was going to sing something. Perhaps the song he wrote about Terri ... and her mesmerizing green eyes.

Terri busied herself with her VCR. It had eaten a tape the night before and she had it apart on the table when the phone rang. She had been screening her calls since Kurt left, she didn't want to talk to him. He hurt her the way he ran off and she decided that she didn't need that kind of a guy. She didn't want him running off whenever he got frightened off. She couldn't stand the heartbreak of a guy who screwed women in every state he traveled to. That was not what she wanted. She wanted someone who would be around, someone who was there for her. Someone who cared about her. Kurt would not be that man. He was sexy, handsome, and a fantastic conversationalist but the first sign of trouble and he fled. Nope, she would get over him if it killed her. The answering machine picked up and Kurt's voice filled the room.

"Terri, it's Kurt. Give me a call back when you get home. And by the way, you're it." He said and then hung up. She decided that ignoring him just may kill her. She felt the same excitement hearing his voice now as it did when he was here and would call her at work. She felt the desire to run over to the phone and call him right back. She sat there and stared at the phone, willing herself to stay put. She sat there most of five minutes staring at it, not moving. Then she got up and went into another room. She wandered around the house reminding herself of all the reasons he was not the man for her. The phone rang a while later and it was Andrea. When the answering machine picked up and Terri heard her voice she picked up the phone and shut off the machine.

"Where were you?" Andrea asked.

"I was busy fixing something and couldn't get to the phone in time." Terri lied. Andrea and Terri talked a while, Andrea telling Terri about the ride to Pennsylvania and back. Terri had nothing interesting to talk about and they hung up a short time later. She went back to the VCR and, using a tweezer, pulled bits and pieces of video tape out from between the rollers. Her mind constantly wandered to Kurt. She wondered why he was even calling. "He must have left something here." She reasoned, muttering to herself. "Well, he'll just have to do without." By the time she got the pieces out and the whole thing put back together it was dark outside. Terri put on a dim light in the living room and sat on the couch by herself in the silence, Missy her Lab was curled up by her side. Terri lightly stroked Missy and Missy sighed heavily and then went to sleep under her master's touch. After some time Terri gave in to the sadness that enveloped her and cried softly ...

Kurt waited until after 10 for Terri to call back and once he decided she wasn't going to he dressed for bed, washed up and crawled in. He pulled the covers up and lay awake for a long time wondering what he would say to Terri when she called. How could he convince her that he missed her ... And he did, miss her .....
