Chapter 10

I rolled over, glanced at the clock and gasped.  It was after 10!  My mouth tasted awful and my face was greasy.  Josh lay on his stomach, one arm resting above his head, the other lay alongside his body.  I crawled out of bed and dragged my tired self to the bathroom where I brushed my teeth and scrubbed my face until it was shiny.  I remembered crashing last night but didn’t remember brushing my teeth or washing my face.  I went back into the bedroom and checked on Josh.  He hadn’t moved an inch.  I decided I would get my run over with early then make breakfast for us.  After changing into running gear I took off.  Sweaty and exhausted I made it back home and then showered.  By this time Josh had rolled over onto his back and lay silent, his mouth open slightly and snoring softly.  I held my wet hair back as I leaned over him and barely kissed his mouth.  He suddenly reached up and grabbed my arms and pulled me down next to him.

“Where do you think you’re going?”  He croaked.  I smiled.  What a faker!  I thought he was sound asleep ….

“I’m going to make breakfast.”  I said curling up into his arms.

“How about I call you breakfast and make you?”  He never even opened his eyes when he spoke.  I giggled.  He kissed the back of my neck softly sending shivers up my spine.

“Aren’t you hungry?”  I asked quietly.

“Mmhmm.”  He replied and I felt his teeth  digging into my skin.  “I’m hungry for you.”  He whispered.  I laughed.

“You are the randiest man I’ve ever met!”  He snorted into my ear.

“It’s your own fault.”  He said.  I laughed.  “It is.”  He insisted.  “If you weren’t so goddamned beautiful and sexy I wouldn’t be half this lustful.”

“Well then I’ll just let myself go and become a bitch to save you from being lustful.”  He growled and bit me.  I squealed and jumped.

“Don’t you dare!”  He said.  I tried to pull away but he held me fast.  “I said you’re not going  anywhere.”  I sighed and settled back against him as he trailed his fingers around the slopes and dips in my breast through my shirt.  It wasn’t long before his fingers moved slower and slower and then stopped altogether.  I waited until I was sure he was deep into slumber before I snuck out of bed and went downstairs to make breakfast.

Chris lay on his back on his bed, his arms folded behind his head.  He was fully clothed, shoes and all – he had been awake since 8 and after a delicious full breakfast that his mom made he was back in bed and thinking about things.  He was overwrought with a mixture of anger, grief, and depression and was at a loss as to what to do about it.  The last time he and Lori were together was disappointing to say the least, unnerving to say the most.  He had tried to kiss her and she spurned his advances.  It was Josh’s fault.  He charmed her away from him and it wasn’t fair.  He touched his lips absently as though they had been burned by the kiss he’d given her.  She was so beautiful and he’d admired her for so long then in comes Josh and whoosh!  She’s out of his life.  Well it wasn’t fair.  Josh knew how he felt about her, he’d been talking to him about her for years.  Yeah, he stole her from him on purpose.  He felt a rush of emotion and choked it back.  He wouldn’t cry, he wouldn’t be depressed … he lay there deep in thought then a smile spread across his face slowly.  He decided that he wouldn’t get mad – he would get even.  And he knew exactly how.  He felt a whole new surge of emotion as he lay in bed plotting Josh’s relationship’s demise …

Josh tapped the computer desk with a pencil as he listened to his mother talk.  Needing to vent, she’d had an encounter with her sister and was a little peeved.  I busied myself with laundry but milled about checking in on him now and then to make sure things weren’t getting out of hand and he wasn’t sitting there rolling his eyes or gritting his teeth.  The subject of having a family breakfast had come up again and I caught him a few times shaking his leg nervously and biting his lower lip.  I walked past and he seemed to be doing all right.  He held a hand up to me in a greeting.  I waved back and kept going.  I hopped down the stairs and into the kitchen where I retrieved a dust cloth and some anti-static dusting spray then headed over to the piano.  It hadn’t been dusted in some time and it was in dire need of it.  Spraying the cloth lightly I moved my hand in circular motions over the surface of it.  As I buffed I wondered how things were going with Josh and his mom.  I also began to get a sense of what might be between the brothers and that something just could be me.  Well, there was no contest in my opinion.  Chris was a nice boy but my heart belonged to Josh. Thoughts of Josh provoked a sudden rush of heat through my entire being, my heart sped up a beat and a smile spread on my face.  Suddenly I felt arms around my waist and my heart leaped into my throat.

“Whatcha doin’?”  Josh asked.  I turned and frowned at him, my lips pulled tight into a thin line.

“Dammit you like to do that, don’t you?”  He opened his eyes wide innocently.

“What?  What did I do?”  He asked.  I sighed.

“You scared the shit out of me again.”  He burst out laughing.

“I’m sorry.”  He said.  I nodded, skeptical of his regret when he was laughing so hard he could barely talk.

“Yeah, sure you are.”  He glanced down and saw my nipples straining through my shirt.  He raised one eyebrow at me.  “Okay now I see why you do it.”  He giggled and leaned down to kiss me.

“No, that’s not why.”  He said.

“So you do do it on purpose!  Ah ha!”  I said.  He shook his head.

“No!  Don’t make me out to be a bad boy.”  He thought for a moment then he leered lecherously at me.  “On second thought go ahead and make me out to be a bad boy – one who needs a serious spanking.”  He said and then he growled snapping his teeth.  I giggled.  Burying his face in my neck he nipped at my skin.

“So how was your conversation with your mom?”  I asked.  He sighed and then pulled back to look at me.  Sitting down on the piano bench he pulled me into his lap.

“Well …”  He began.  “How would you feel about going out to dinner with my parents tonight?”  I gulped.    I knew it would come, the dreaded meeting of the parents but I had hoped it would be a while still before I had it to look forward to.

“Ummm …”  I said and puffed up my cheeks with air.  He watched me, anxious for an answer.  “Well … I think it would be okay.  How are they with it?”  He tipped his head one way and then the other before speaking.

“They are looking forward to it.”  I shrugged.  His body language said one thing and his mouth said another.

“Sure then.  When is this to take place?”  He tilted his head down but looked up at me with his eyes bashfully.

          “How about tonight?”  I sighed.

“Is Chris going to be there?”  He shook his head.

“They are hanging out with him tomorrow.”  I let air out of my lungs.

“Well okay, let’s do it.”  I hopped up off his lap and went back to my task of polishing the piano.  Josh stayed on the seat and lifted the cover off the keys.  He played a few notes and then looked at me.

“Do you play?”  He asked me.  I shook my head.

          “Nope.”  I said.  He frowned.

“Then why do you have a baby grand piano in your living room if you don’t play?”  Planting the hand with the dustcloth in it on my hip, I leaned against the piano.

“Because it looked like it should be there.  And my aunt was giving it away, she bought her son a grand.”  He fingered the keys and began to play a song.

“It’s beautiful.”  He said.  The piano itself wasn’t nearly as beautiful as the sound he made come out of it.  As Josh sat and played I finished polishing and went about dusting off every surface in the room.  When his playing slowed and I was finished with my task I slid my arms around his neck and leaned into his back.  He closed the cover on the keyboard once more and pulled me onto his lap.  He leaned me backwards and teased my lips with his.  He pulled back and we sat gazing into each other’s eyes.  There was nothing else at that moment, no sound, no people, no fans, no crowds, no jealousy, no parents, just the two of us on a piano bench in my silent living room.  My eyes swept over his face lightly, his eyes, his lashes, his fuzzy cheeks, his plump, red lips, slightly parted, the brunette curls that framed his face … he was flawless.

“I have to tell you something.”  He said softly.  I watched his lips move.

“What?”  I asked, breathless.  He searched my eyes.

“I think I’m falling in love with you.”  I felt my breath catch in my chest and my breathing stuttered.  I couldn’t say anything, I willed myself and wouldn’t cooperate.  “Was that a mistake to say that?”  He whispered.  I shook my head and kissed him lightly.

“No.”  I said, a slight smiled played on my lips.  “No it wasn’t and Josh …”  He looked at me and licked his lips.  “I think I love you too.”

I spent the good part of an hour holed up in my closet trying to decide what to wear and more importantly what NOT to wear.  I sighed and flipped through my shirts once again.  Josh was already dressed and hanging out in the living room playing a game by himself while I stressed over what to wear to dinner with his parents.  I blew air out of my mouth and then grabbed a plain blue sweater off the shelf and slipped it over my head.  I smoothed it down and then looked in the mirror at myself.  I wore plain flared jeans and a blue sweater.  I let my hair hang loose and put a touch of makeup on.  Deciding that I would just leave it at that, I went down stairs to find Josh.  He was wrestling with a game controller.

“Who’s winning?”  I asked as I walked up to him and sat cross-legged on the carpet.  He glanced at me and frowned.

“Who?   What?”  He mumbled before turning his attention back to the screen.  He paused the game and gazed at me, a sly smile playing on his lips.

“What?”  I asked and smiled.  He just stared at me.  “What are you staring at?  Now you’re laughing at me!”  I pouted.  He reached over, slid his hand into my hair behind my ear and pulled me to him for a kiss.

“I’m not laughing at you, sweetie.”  He said.  “I’m adoring you!”

          “Oh really?”  I asked, skeptical.

“Yeah, you are beautiful.”  I blushed and looked down at my feet.  “My parents are going to love you!”  He turned back to the TV and un-paused his game.

          “Let’s hope so.”  I said.

The silence inside the car was almost deafening as we drove through downtown Beverly Hills.  Josh pulled up in front of a restaurant called Chaco.  A tuxedoed valet opened the door for me and I slid out.  I waited on wobbly legs nervously as Josh rounded the side of the car and slid his arm around me.  I was thankful for that.

“They are here already.”  He whispered as we skated through the front door and were met by the hostess.  Josh told them we were meeting someone and then led me towards a table for four that was currently occupied by two elderly people.  The man I assumed to be Mr. Groban stood as we approached.  The first thing I noticed was that he was tall and thin like his son.  I smiled nervously.

“Josh,”  Mr. Groban said as we approached and shook his son’s hand then pulled him in for a hug.  Josh put his arm around me and pushed me forward.

“Mom, Dad, this is Lori.”  He said with a smile.  I reached out to shake Mr. Groban’s hand and he pulled me in for a hug, clapping me on the back.  Josh’s mom stood and we embraced briefly before Josh held out a chair and indicated for me to sit.    We sat down and all at once the table was engulfed in an uncomfortable silence.

“So, Lori, Josh tells me you’re in radio.”  Mr. Groban said, breaking the cloud of laconism that hung over us.  I nodded quickly.

“Yes, sir, I have a radio show in the mornings.”  The elder Groban smiled and nodded slowly.

“Would I have ever heard it?”  He asked.  I took a sip of water from a wine glass and then set it back down on the table carefully.

“Well you might have, do you like heavy metal music?”  I asked.  Josh burst out in laughter and banged his fist on the table.  I shrugged my shoulders at Jack Groban and smiled.  “I guess that would be a ‘no’.”  I said.  He smiled back at me.

“I heard you two were out quite late last night.”  Lindy, Josh’s mom said.  Not knowing if she was addressing me or Josh, I turned to him and let him answer that.  He frowned.

“Now how would you have heard about that?”  He asked, seeming somewhat annoyed.  I poked him in the thigh with my finger.  He ignored me.

“Your brother.”  Lindy said, matter-of-fact.  Josh sighed and looked at me.  I raised my eyebrows questioningly.

“Was he there?”  Josh asked.  Lindy frowned.

“I don’t think so, he said someone sent him a picture.”  Josh looked quickly at me again.

“Why do you keep looking at me?”  I asked him quietly.

“He’s trying to get me into trouble.”  He seethed.  I rolled my eyes.  He turned to his mom.  “Yeah, Mom, Lori and I had a great time last night.  She was the host of this cool rock concert and I got to play with one of my favorite bands.  It was very cool.”  He smiled.  Lindy shot him a look.

“We’ll discuss it later, Josh.”  He took my hand and kissed it.  It was fairly obvious to me that he was desperately trying to lighten the situation and whatever else his mom had to say wasn’t going to be something she wanted to either discuss with me around or at this particular night out.  I sighed and picked up the menu.

Things got much better as the night wore on.  I found that I had a few things in common with both Lindy and Jack, for example Lindy is very involved in charity work and I have been too.  And I was on the golf team in high school so that I had in common with Jack.  I felt more accepted by the time the check was paid and the four of us stood outside waiting for our respective vehicles.  When the elder Groban’s car arrived Lindy threw her arms around me and hugged me tightly.

“I’m glad I met you.”  She said to me.  “We will have lunch, okay?”  I nodded and once she released me then Jack had his turn.  They got into the car and drove off.  We left not too long after that.

Josh sat on the couch, his feet up on the ottoman, in one hand he held a beer and the other hand was lightly stroking my hair as we watched a movie.  I was tired, so tired and I think after the stress of having dinner with Josh’s parents my body had enough.  His fingers ran through a few strands of hair.  He picked them up and let individual hairs fall as he rubbed them in between his fingers.  It was tickling my face but as sleepy as I was it was easily ignored.  I tucked the pillow I had set on his lap under my cheek and before long I was out.  When I woke up, the house was dark and Josh was carrying me up the stairs to bed.  This time I made sure I brushed my teeth and washed my face before hitting the sheets.  He sat up against the pillows as I clicked off the bathroom light and made my way in the dark to the bed.  I slid into the cool bed and Josh pulled me onto him.  His body was nice and warm.  I leaned up and kissed his neck.  Sliding his arms around me he sighed and pulled me close.  I slid my hands down his belly to the semi-hardness between his legs.  He said nothing.  I slid my hand around it and gave it long strokes.  It sprang to attention within a stroke or two.  I smiled to myself.  I could hear his breathing getting heavier as I fondled him.  When I felt him oozing from the tip I knew he was good and ready.  I slid my hand downward and ran it over his balls.  They were sucked up tight against his body.  Josh sighed and slid downward on the bed.  He pushed my hair from my face and kissed me, his lips sucking on mine.  He swallowed my top lip and began to suck on it, his thick bottom lip rubbing against the inside of my mouth as his fingers found themselves between my legs.  He stroked me lightly at first and as my breathing became labored and my moans became more frequent, his fingers moved faster and the faster they moved the more wet I became.  He sucked harder on my lip, his fingers moved tantalizingly across the hard button between my legs as the pressure was building.  Suddenly I felt a tingly heat spread throughout my mid-section.  I closed my eyes and felt it tingling all over, making me feel inflamed and dreamlike.  He urged me on with his fingers and his mouth.

“Come for me baby …”  He whispered.  I could barely hear him with the rushing sound that filled my ears and the pleasure that was spreading over me like hot wax.  When the storm was calm and I could breathe again, Josh positioned himself on top of me and entered me slowly and purposefully.   He made gentle love to me, savoring each and every stroke.  He watched me, stared into my eyes, seeing my pleasure, taking it in and giving it right back and when I saw the look of ultimate arousal cross his face I knew he was close and this time I urged him on by clenching and unclenching inside, gripping him, moving my hips to meet his thrusts and before long he came inside me and then rolled sideways pulling me with him.  We lay together silent for some time, his arms enveloping me in warmth.  Then he kissed the top of my head.

“I love you.”  He whispered.  I think I said it back, I’m not sure.  I was asleep.
